The Florida State football team has suffered its first major injury blow for the 2022 football season. On Wednesday, head coach Mike Norvell announced that offensive lineman Kayden Lyles will miss the upcoming season after suffering an undisclosed injury last week.

“I hate it for him, just the work that he’s put in, he’s done a great job since he got here,” Norvell said. “Incredible person. The relationships that he’s built. We’ll explore all options here moving forward. But I just wanted to … we found that out here over the weekend. We are going to move forward and he’s going to actively be a part of what we’re doing moving forward.”

Lyles started 15 total games for Wisconsin before transferring to FSU earlier this year. He was expected to compete with Maurice Smith for the starting center position. With Lyles no longer in the mix, Norvell and offensive coordinator Alex Atkins will be looking at options for depth at the center position.

“And that’s one position that you have to always have a plan if something is to happen,” explained Norvell. “As we get out of camp, there is going to be a little more continuity. But guys are working at snapping daily, we are probably going to have five or six that are going to have that in their back pocket. Dillan Gibbons, he’s done that before, if we ever needed to get to that point. I think Darius [Washington], Mo [Maurice Smith]. Losing Kayden, it definitely takes a hit to the depth that we have there. But we have a great plan moving forward.”
