FSU DL Mandrell Desir earns Freshman All-America honors
Mandrell Desir, who led Florida State in sacks with 6.5 and tackles for loss with 7.5 this season, was selected to the On3 Freshman All-America Team, which was announced Monday.
Desir finished his freshman season with 30 tackles, a forced fumble, one quarterback hurry and a pass breakup. Desir missed being named ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year by just two points to Cal’s Luke Ferrelli.
On3’s director of scouting, Charles Power, was effusive in his praise for Desir.
“Mandrell Desir was the most disruptive true freshman defensive lineman in college football this fall, leading all first-year interior defenders with 24 pressures and five sacks, according to Pro Football Focus. The 6-foot-4, 262-pound Miami Norland product showed the versatility to line up across multiple spots on the defensive front, consistently generating disruption in the backfield with his initial quickness and motor,” Power said. “Desir and his twin brother, Darryll Desir, were late additions to Florida State’s 2024 class after flipping from UCF, and the move looks to have been a late-cycle steal for the Seminoles.”
Both Mandrell and his twin brother, Darryll, both were key figures in the Florida State defensive line rotation and drew praise as soon as they took the field in spring camp.
“Those guys, they’re built different,” Florida State head coach Mike Norvell said. “I say that in the best, positive way. I mean, they’ve got great desire, want to. They bring physicality and edge to each play.”

Desir’s sacks total is the third-most for a true freshman in FSU history and most since 2019 first-round NFL Draft pick and two-time Pro Bowl selection Brian Burns’ 9.5 in 2016.
Norvell also gushed about how they performed in the season opener Alabama.
“That was their first college game, and going into it, we heard plenty about the offensive line we were going to face — and what that was going to look like,” Norvell said. “And those guys didn’t play like freshmen. They played like guys that wanted to go out there and show who they are and what this team can be.”
