Texas A&M press gives Florida State fits; Seminoles trounced by Aggies

TAMPA — The Texas A&M men’s basketball team started the game with an 11-0 run, and the Aggies never looked back in rolling Friday evening to a 95-59 rout of Florida State.

One of the Seminoles’ concerns going into the game was handling the Aggies’ full-court press, and that proved to be an issue early and throughout the game. Texas A&M scored 21 points off turnovers and 20 points on the fast break, and Florida State never found much of a solution.

With the loss, FSU falls to 5-2 on the season while the Aggies improve to 6-2.

“They came out and they took their belt off and spanked us all night with it,” Florida State coach Luke Loucks said. “That’s a really good basketball team.”

Ruben Dominguez scored 21 points to lead Texas A&M, with all of his scoring coming from beyond the 3-point line. And forward Rashaun Agee recorded a double-double with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

Mackenzie Mgbako also got into double-digits for the Aggies with 10 points, and Pop Isaacs added 15.

The Aggies also completely dominated the boards, out-rebounding Florida State, 60-40.

FSU did start mounting a comeback at points in the second half, with both an 11-0 and an 8-0 run, before A&M ran away down the stretch.

“Offensively, we didn’t do our job,” Loucks said. “We couldn’t get by the initial defender. And when you can’t break down a defense, you create no advantages. They kept us in front all night long. And the dominoes don’t happen when you just dribble around the perimeter and launch 3s. We want to shoot the ball, but we don’t want to shoot the shots we shot tonight.”

Florida State connected on just 29 percent of its attempts from the field (21-for-73) and 22 percent from 3-point range (9-for-41). The Seminoles also only hit 8 of 17 shots from the free-throw line.

“To me, that shows a total lack of focus going into this game,” Loucks said. “Either they weren’t focused or they were scared. Which neither [option is] good.”

Kobe MaGee was a bright spot for the Seminoles, scoring 21 on the night. Point guard Robert McCray struggled shooting, but he did do well in the assist column with 11.

The Seminoles dropped to 82nd in the KenPom ratings after being ranked 57th before the game.

Florida State will take on Georgia next Tuesday as part of the SEC-ACC Challenge at the Tucker Center at 9 p.m.
