Newly hired Florida State defensive backs coach Patrick Surtain Sr. has lived a football life rife with success. An All-American in college at Southern Miss and a two-time Pro Bowler in the NFL, Surtain also won three state championships as the head coach at American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla. and was part of a playoff berth this past season with the Miami Dolphins.

This, though, will be Surtain’s first foray into college coaching. He is confident his wide-ranging career in the game will be an asset, and his familiarity with recruiting will make the transition smooth.

Surtain made it clear the staying in the state of Florida for his family’s sake was a driving force, but so too was the success FSU experienced this past season. “If it was (the University of) Minnesota, I’d probably stay with the Miami Dolphins. If it was Washington or Washington State, I’d probably stay with the Miami Dolphins,” said Surtain.

“I don’t see (the success) slowing down anytime soon. (Mike Norvell) has a blueprint in place that is going to take us where we’re going to get.”
