It was a three-team race down the home stretch, but the Florida State Seminoles were fortunate to nose out Penn State and Miami at the wire and land four-star defensive back Conrad Hussey.

After pushing his announcement back a day, the talented safety made his decision Thursday evening and announced on Instagram that he would be a Seminole.

Hussey, a standout safety who starred at national powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, had been committed to Penn State since the spring. But he visited Florida State and Miami in the final two weekends before the early signing period and ultimately chose the Seminoles.

“Conrad is one of the best players in the country,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said in a news release after Hussey’s signing. “He’s a dynamic playmaker with great versatility who can be productive at a variety of positions in our secondary. He was a top target for us throughout the recruiting process, and we are happy to keep him home.”

According to the On3 Consensus rankings, Hussey is one of the top 20 safeties in the country and one of the top 250 prospects overall.

Florida State made up major ground on Penn State in the final weeks of the recruiting process, culminating with Hussey’s official visit earlier this month.

“The conversations with the coaches and with the players. It’s a true relationship,” Hussey said before leaving Tallahassee. “When I sat down with them, you could see it was more than just football. … It was just an automatic click. Everybody was cool, and Tallahassee is a cool place to be.”

Here is the On3 scouting summary for Hussey before his senior season:

The next man up at the St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) defensive back factory who can play center field, deep half, man coverage and walk down in the box. Good looking build and frame that can put on an easy 10 to 15 pounds. Measures in at 6-foot-1.5, 190 pounds with a 6-foot-3.5 wingspan. Explosive player whose athletic ability shines on tape. Jumped nearly a 26-inch vertical during the spring camp circuit prior to his senior year. Ran 10.90 in the 100m, 23.05 in the 200m and jumped a 21-foot-2 long jump during his junior track and field campaign. Ball skills are apparent on film. Recorded 4 interceptions during his state championship winning junior season. Does an excellent job of playing through receivers hands at the catch point. Fluid hips and sideline to sideline speed allow him to cover every blade of grass on the field. Much more comfortable in space than in the box, but is a willing tackler. Extremely high ceiling and upside. Will rise up draft boards if he can become more efficient in the run game.
