Georgia falls to Northwestern, drops third straight on hardwood

It was more of the same for Georgia in its 78-62 loss to the 5-1 Northwestern Wildcats in the third place game of the Roman Legends Classic as the Bulldogs fell to 2-4 on the young 2021-22 season. Some of Georgia’s biggest problems over the last few games were exposed against the Wildcats, and the second-best 3-point shooting team in the Big 10 took advantage of it.

Against the Virginia Cavaliers on Monday night, the Dawgs turned the ball over 16 times and shot 14.3% from the 3-point line. Against Northwestern, they put up similar stats with 14 turnovers and went 20.8% from three. Georgia also went 15-for-23 from the free-throw line, which translates to a mere 65%.

The game was competitive for the majority of the first half. However, the Wildcats ended the half on a 35-13 run, fueled by 3-pointers, Georgia turnovers, and a buzzer-beater half-court shot. Northwestern’s largest lead of the game was by 24 points, when they led 54-30 deep into the second half.

Foul trouble was another big problem for the Dawgs on Tuesday night, as both big men Braelen Bridges and Jailyn Ingram got into foul trouble early. Bridges was a consistent bright spot for the Bulldogs on offense, but his minutes were limited due to the fouls. The transfer from Illinois-Chicago had 12 points and five rebounds in only 21 minutes of playing time. Meanwhile, Ingram finished the game with 10 points and nine rebounds, nearly following up his double-double against Virginia with another. However, he fouled out with 3:12 left in the game.

Meanwhile, for Northwestern, four Wildcats reached double figures. Boo Buie led all scorers with 22 points followed by Ryan Young, Pete Nance and Ty Berry with 17, 14 and 10 respectively. Nance had nine rebounds to lead Northwestern in the first meeting between the two programs.

The Dawgs went on a 9-0 scoring run in the second half to cut the Wildcat lead to 10, but Georgia’s momentum stalled out with a 4:00 scoring drought late into the game.

One of the few bright spots for the Dawgs was Kario Oquendo, who tied for the team lead in points with 12, while also having two rebounds, two assists and a poster dunk in just 29 minutes of playing time.

The Bulldogs will return to action after Thanksgiving next Sunday when they face off against the 4-2 Wofford Terriers at 4:00 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum on SEC Network+.
