The Georgia Bulldogs are in need of depth and health at the running back position. They added a piece with SEC experience on Monday night when former Tennessee ball carrier Len’Neth Whitehead told DawgsHQ that he was transferring to Georgia in a few weeks.

The former four-star RB from the class of 2020, who turned down offers from Boston College and others, will enroll at Georgia as a walk-on. He spoke exclusively with DawgsHQ last week in Athens about why he has made this decision to join Kirby Smart’s team.

“The culture, the traditions, and I want to be coached by some of the best minds in college football,” said Whitehead. “I feel like Coach (Dell) McGee and Coach Kirby (Smart) can get me to the best player I can be.”

Whitehead started his Volunteer career at linebacker but after an injury sidelined him for 2020, he moved to running back in 2021. He had 32 carries for 207 yards and two touchdowns that season while, again, battling an injury. That season saw him pile 76 yards on nine carries against Missouri. He also caught a pass for 10 yards and was named the SEC’s Co-Freshman of the Week.

He then missed all of the 2022 season with an upper body injury.

Coming from Tennessee, he has had a few opportunities to prepare for games against Georgia and watch film, both during the season and in the offseason, of the Bulldogs.

“It was hard nosed ball, like an old school mindset,” he said. “You could see how they played on film. They got after the ball and the way the offensive line came off the ball and got after you, they didn’t take plays off. They came after you. You have to admire that and give them kudos honestly.”

Dell McGee was key in landing Whitehead to his room and this is the second time the Georgia running backs coach has recruited the Athens Academy product.

“From the conversations we have had, he is a cool guy,” Whitehead said. “His knowledge of the position , you can beat it. He has been producing running backs year after year. I am excited to learn from him.”

After being in the transfer portal and playing on the college level awhile, Whitehead says that he is in a different frame of mind than when he entered the Tennessee program straight out of high school.

“Motivation. I am determined to put my head down and work each day,” he said. “There is no other way. No knock to anyone else already there, we can all help each other get better. I am coming to work day one.”

Walking into Sanford Stadium with a Georgia uniform is something he is already thinking about.

“Unbelievable, I day dream about it every day honestly,” Whitehead told DawgsHQ. “I turned down other places to have that experience of being a Georgia Bulldog.”
