The 2017 Georgia football team rode the legs of two senior running backs, Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. That duo returned to Athens for their last year of eligbility to win championships in Athens.

Michel still remembers telling second-year head coach Kirby Smart about his decision to stay at Georgia for his senior season. Michel recalled the conversation on 92.9 The Game Steakhouse on Thursday.

“I remember sitting in his office after making the decision, I could feel how excited he was and where this program was going to go,” Michel told Rusty Mansell and Steak Shapiro.

Nick Chubb trusted Sony Michel like no other

Chubb and Michel became close friends as members of the same recruiting class. They both battled their injuries in Athens and fought back to full strength alongside one another.

There was a deep trust between Chubb and Michel. That trust was tested in the 2018 Rose Bowl. Michel fumbled the football late in the game.

Chubb went to Georgia’s coaching staff and told them to ride Michel the rest of the way. Michel went on to score the game-winning touchdown in the second overtime.

“That moment kind of represents Georgia football,” Michel said. “When I fumbled that football, Nick Cubb ran and told coach to ‘put Sony back in the game’. I found out about that after the game. As a running back, you’re not supposed to put the ball on the ground. Once you’re able to get back into the game, you either can make up for it or it can stick with you for the rest of the game as you’re sitting on the sidelines. When that overtime moment came, I had that chance because Nick told the coaches to put me back in the game. I had the opportunity to make a play. I didn’t try and make a big play and change the game or make up for the fumble. It was just to execute the play follow my rules, and great things will happen.”

Michel and Chubb will release their documentary ‘Thunder and Lightning’ on Friday.
