The 2022 PGA Championship got underway Thursday at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma with eight former Georgia players in the field. One of those Bulldogs that teed it up stood out from the rest as Chris Kirk sits three off from the lead and in the top 10 of the tournament, tied for seventh place.

Kirk, a member of Georgia’s 2005 national championship winning team, was one of the first golfers on the course on Thursday – advantageous for the course’s conditions – and got off to a good start. After making par on the first five holes, the Athens, Georgia resident birdied two of the next four to go into the turn at two-under-par. Then it was a clean back nine shooting even-par to finish his first round without any bogies on the card. He’ll tee off at 1:47 p.m. ET for round two on Friday – another tee time that forecasts well for him with strong winds on tap in the morning.

As for the other former Georgia players in the field, it wasn’t quite as strong of a day. Russell Henley was the next best Bulldog at even-par, tied for 27th. Sepp Straka was 1-over, Bubba Watson, Kevin Kisner and Keith Mitchell all went 2-over on the day while Brian Harman, who was tied with Mitchell going into the tournament for the best odds to win it among the Georgia crew, and Hudson Swafford were 4-over to round out the group from Georgia.
