BOX SCORE RECAP: Hawkeyes earn in-state win over Drake

The Iowa Women’s Basketball team keeps right on rolling. On Thursday night, the Drake Bulldogs came to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to renew a storied in-state rivalry. The 21st-ranked Hawkeyes handled the new-look Bulldogs 100-58 to move to 3-0 on the young season. Iowa has now won 22 of the last 23 meetings against Drake dating back to the 2001 season.
The visiting Bulldogs got out to an early 9-8 lead in the first quarter, but the Hawkeyes answered with a 25-0 run over the span of 8:29 to put themselves in the driver’s seat. Drake went on a 10-0 run in the second quarter to cut into the deficit, but the early hole was far too much to overcome. Iowa led 45-25 at the half and didn’t let up in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 29-13 in the third quarter to open up a 36-point advantage.
Iowa scored 100 points on 76 possessions (1.316 points per possession), while shooting 41-of-76 (53.9%) from the floor, 10-of-29 (34.5%) from three-point range and 8-of-17 (47.1%) from the free throw line. Six Hawkeyes scored in double figures for the second consecutive game, with Layla Hays (14), Ava Heiden (14), Chit-Chat Wright (14), Emely Rodriguez (11), Hannah Stuelke (11) and Taylor Stremlow (10) getting it done. Stuelke had a notable stat line, finishing with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Drake scored 58 points on 78 possessions (0.744 points per possession), while shooting 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor, 8-of-27 (29.6%) from three-point range and 6-of-12 (50.0%) from the free throw line. Grace Knutson (19), Abbie Aalsma (16) and Peyton McCabe (10) led the Bulldogs in scoring.
The Hawkeyes outrebounded the Bulldogs 44-38, pulling down 28-of-40 (70.0%) defensive rebounds and 16-of-42 (38.1%) offensive rebounds. The turnover battle went in favor of the Hawkeyes, turning it over 12 times to 23 turnovers for the Bulldogs. Iowa outscored Drake 50-22 in points off turnovers/second chance points.
