When the switch flips to postseason play, the mindset flips to one thing and one thing only. Win. Ugly or emphatic, it doesn’t matter.

The Iowa Field Hockey team entered the Big Ten Tournament on a four-game winning streak and didn’t miss a beat, grinding out a 1-0 win over tournament host #17 Indiana to advance to the semifinals on Friday. It’s the Hawkeyes first win at the Big Ten Tournament since 2020.

After the two sides combined for nine goals in a conference/non-conference two-game weekend back in September, this one had far less offensive production. It’s just the third time in 36 all-time meetings between the Hawkeyes and Hoosiers that a game has ended with a 1-0 final score.

The lone goal came early and off of a rush of Hawkeye pressure on the penalty corner. In the 2nd minute, Iowa earned a pair of penalty corners, but Indiana was able to twice block the shot of Dionne van Aalsum from the top of the circle. Moments later, in the 6th minute, the Hawkeyes were right back on the attack earning a penalty corner and two re-awards later, they found the back of the net. On the third try, it was the NCAA leading goal scorer, Dionne van Aalsum scoring her 27th of the season from a direct shot at the top of the circle to make it 1-0 Hawkeyes.

A 1-0 lead felt far from safe with a full crowd at Deborah Tobias Field cheering on their home side Hoosiers. The Hawkeyes tried their best to add to the advantage in the third quarter, but just couldn’t get one past Indiana goalkeeper Sadie Canelli. This time the penalty corner rush included three re-awards. However, three Sadie Canelli saves later, and the score was still just 1-0 in favor of Iowa.

Finishing the game just 1-of-9 (11.1%) on the penalty corner attack, the Hawkeye defense was able to lock down on the Hoosiers and make sure that the missed opportunities didn’t come back to haunt them. Indiana managed just two shots on goal, which tied a season-low that was previously set in the season-opener against Boston College.

Their best chance came in the dying moments, but it didn’t go as a shot on goal. With just over four minutes to play, in the 56th minute, Ines Garcia Prado snuck into the circle and chipped on towards the front of the net. Celia Arroyo Cabezud dove to the ground and got a stick on the ball, but shoveled it just wide of the goal. The Hawkeyes were able to drain the rest of the clock to come away with a hard-fought 1-0 win.
