The University of Iowa is starting to update its 2023 roster with spring practice just around the corner. That means we get a sneak peak at what jersey numbers the newcomers will be wearing this spring with the Hawkeyes bringing in several mid-year transfers and early enrollees.

Starting at quarterback, Cade McNamara will be wearing No. 12 for Iowa this year. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, McNamara transferred in from Michigan with two years of eligibility remaining. As a full-time starter for Michigan in 2021, he completed 210 of 327 pass attempts (64.2%) for 2,576 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. McNamara is coming off knee surgery last fall, but is already participating in workouts with his teammates in Iowa City.

Also at quarterback, Deacon Hill will be wearing No. 10 at Iowa. Hill is listed at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds on the roster and comes to Iowa from Wisconsin, where he was a backup the last two seasons. He was originally set to transfer to Fordham, but switched to Iowa once Carson May announced that he would be leaving. Hill comes in with three years of eligibility remaining.

At wide receiver, Seth Anderson will be wearing No. 6 for the Hawkeyes. Listed at 6-foot-0 and 178 pounds, Anderson is the son of former NFL wide receiver Flipper Anderson. He transferred in from Charleston Southern, where he named offensive freshman of the year in the Big South Conference after racking up 42 catches for 628 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Anderson, who chose Iowa over Georgia Tech and Kansas, has three years of eligibility remaining.

Also at wide receiver, Austin Kutscher is coming in as a preferred walk-on and will be wearing No. 23 at Iowa. The 6-foot-0, 198-pound Kutscher is a grad transfer from Ohio State, where he was a walk-on for the Buckeyes and appeared in three games. Now, he is looking for more of an opportunity at Iowa and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

At tight end, Erick All will be wearing No. 83 at Iowa this season. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 255 pounds, All transferred to Iowa from Michigan after missing most of last season due to a back injury that required surgery in October. Now, he is healthy and looking to return to form at Iowa. Coming in, he obviously already has a good relationship with the expected starter at quarterback, Cade McNamara. In his last full season as a starter at Michigan in 2021, All had 34 catches for 374 yards and two touchdowns. Coming in, he has two years of eligibility remaining.

Also at tight end, Hayden Large is coming in as a preferred walk-on and will be wearing No. 88 at Iowa. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Large spent the last three years at Dordt in Sioux Center, IA. There, he posted career numbers of 62 catches for 950 yards and 12 touchdowns at the NAIA level. Now, he looks forward to seeing what he can do in the Big Ten at Iowa. Coming in, Large has two years of eligibility remaining.

At offensive tackle, Daijon Parker will be wearing No. 79 for the Hawkeyes this season. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 300 pounds, Parker transferred to Iowa from Saginaw Valley State this semester. A big, physical, athletic offensive tackle, the 6-foot-6, 300-pound Parker initially committed to Virginia out of the transfer portal, but then switched to the Hawkeyes after a visit to campus. The Detroit native has started at both right and left tackle during his college career and should give the Hawkeyes immediate help. Coming in, Parker has one year of eligibility remaining.

At defensive tackle, junior college signee Anterio Thompson will be wearing No. 54 at Iowa. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, Thompson grew up in Eastern Iowa and attended high school at Dubuque Hempstead. From there, he went to Iowa Western Community College, where he quickly turned into a highly sought after recruit with offers from Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, NC State, Kansas, Washington State, Memphis, and Houston, among others. Now, he will be taking his talents to Iowa and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

At defensive end, junior college recruit Jackson Filer is joining the Hawkeyes as a preferred walk-on and wearing No. 33. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 230 pounds, he is the son of former Hawkeye Rodney Filer, who played fullback for Hayden Fry in the 90s. At Iowa Western, Filer put up big numbers for national champion Reivers this past year. He finished the season with 56 tackles, 28 TFL, and 15.5 sacks, earning NJCAA defensive player of the year honors. Filer received scholarship offers from Coastal Carolina, Toledo, Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Charlotte, UAB, and Ball State, among others, but ultimately wanted a chance to prove himself at the highest level and follow in his father’s footsteps at Iowa. Coming in, he will have two years of eligibility remaining.

At running back, high school signee Terrell Washington Jr. enrolled early and will be wearing No. 8 at Iowa. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 185 pounds, the Texas native has the ability to play both running back and wide receiver. As a senior at Wylie East, he had 598 yards rushing, 604 yards receiving, and 22 touchdowns. Previously committed to Purdue, Washington reopened his recruiting after Jeff Brohm left for Louisville in December. He ended up deciding on Iowa over offers from Vanderbilt, Washington State, Tulane, Tulsa, Toledo, Memphis, and Houston, among others.

Also enrolling early out of high school was preferred walk-on Watts McBride, who will be wearing No. 21 at Iowa. Listed at 6-foot-0 and 195 pounds, the Cedar Rapids native will be playing safety for the Hawkeyes. Early on in his recruitment, McBride held offers from Nebraska, Army, and South Dakota, among others. But he waited it out and found the right fit at Iowa, citing their success with walk-ons at defensive back. As a senior, McBride finished the season with 48 tackles and 5.5 TFL on defense and 592 yards rushing, 163 yards receiving, and 12 touchdowns on offense.
