Despite a head coaching change, the recruiting momentum isn’t slowing down.

Just one day after former Kentucky Women’s Basketball head coach Matthew Mitchell stepped down from the program, four-star post prospect out of the class of 2022, Amauri Williams, has placed the Wildcats as one of her final six college choicesESPN has Williams tabbed as the ninth-best post player in her class. She’s also considering Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Oklahoma State, and Georgia Tech.

Williams has been on the Kentucky radar long before interim head coach Kyra Elzy officially stepped in to fill the void on Friday morning. The 6-foot-3 (some sites have her listed at 6-foot-4) native of Arkansas initially received her offer from UK back in August of 2018–the second program to send her a scholarship after Arkansas–and included the ‘Cats in her top-10, which she released on Aug. 23.

Her game has been described by ESPN’s Dan Olson as such:Imposing low-post performer defends the paint, alters shots, rebounds and initiates the fast break; power-post game in the boxes, scores through contact, brings an emerging back-to-basket game.” (May 2019)

MaxPreps named Williams to the Arkansas All-State Third Team when she was a sophomore this past season–one of just three underclass players among the three teams–playing for North Little Rock High School. She averaged 13.6 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks throughout the year.

Williams said back in August that she planned to close down her recruitment sometime this month, and her announcing a top-six might imply she’s not far off from making a final decision. However, she has said in the past that she will wait until May 2021 before making it official. As of right now, the 2022 Kentucky recruiting class only has one commitment, in-state product Cassidy Rowe, who previously stated on Twitter that the coaching change will not affect her decision to attend UK. Adding a highly-touted post player in Williams could help get some momentum rolling.
