by:Aaron Torres07/05/21

We hope you had a great fourth of July, as we’ve got a holiday edition of the Aaron Torres Podcast. Aaron shares what we learned in Week 1 of the NIL era, discusses Illinois All-American Kofi Cockburn’s decision to enter the portal (and asks if Kentucky is the favorite to land him), and Minnesota guard Marcus Carr is down to four. Where will he end up?

Week 1 of Name, Image, Likeness (2:00): Aaron shares what we learned in Week 1 of Name, Image, Likeness. He explains why this isn’t the “end” of college sports as we know it, and why the first week taught us that most things won’t change at all. He also explains why recruiting won’t change even in the NIL era, even for the top programs, and wonders what the unintended consequences of the rule change will be.

All-American Kofi Cockburn is in the transfer portal (21:00): We got mega news late last week, as Illinois All-American announced he is in the transfer portal. Aaron explains how a once-in-a-lifetime confluence of events led to all the portal activity in recent days, why Cockburn specifically could benefit from coming back to college hoops, and is Kentucky – which now has the assistant coach who recruited him to Illinois – the favorite to land him?

Marcus Carr is down to four (35:00): Finally, Aaron reacts to news that broke as he was recording, as All-Big Ten guard Marcus Carr is down to four schools. He explains who he believes is the favorite, and why he could vault one school to the potential No. 1 team in the country heading into next season if he commits there.
