Ajani Williams' Tuesday News and Views

by:Thomas Beisner04/20/10

Good morning, my KSR brothers and sisters, and welcome to your Tuesday News and Views, which are coming to you a bit late because my son wouldn’t stop whining everytime I tried to write.  He gets that from his mom.  Anyway, on this fine Tuesday morning, we won’t make mention of the month and date or what my college roommates may or may not be doing on this Tuesday.  We don’t condone that around here.  Instead, we’ll give props to former Eastern Michigan scrub Ajani Williams, who managed to make himself one of the most talked-about people on the planet (or at least Twitter) on Monday.  Williams, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, averaged 3 points per game at EMU before averaging 3 points per game in one D-League season and getting cut from the Hawks and Magic in training camp, but saved his fifteen minutes for Monday when he, as commissioner of the Jamaican Basketball Association, announced that Louisville center Samardo Samuels was going pro in a statement that Jeff Goodman said could have been penned by his six-year old daughter.  Besides the obvious strangeness of the announcement coming from the highly prestigious JBA, it came not too long after Rick Pitino announced that all of his upper classmen would return next year.  Many media types are reluctant to accept the Great Ajani’s words as the truth, but my sources told me that Samuels actually started filing the paper work two weeks ago, but he kept getting bodied away from the library computer by a kid half his size (BOOM!  Recycled Twitter jokes!).

Now onto some UK news….

 – After making some strong strides with the class of 2010 last week, the Cats are spending their Tuesday focusing on the future as Cal will visit five-star point guard Tony Wroten, Jr., according to the always reliable Twitter page.  Wroten, besides being past tense in Tennessee for “Tony Writes”, is a 6’4″ point ranked as Rivals’ #9 overall player in his class and declared the Cats as his favorite after Michael Gilchrist’s commitment last week.  He said on his Twitter account, which is extremely entertaining and includes dialogue with Terrence Williams, that he wouldn’t have any problem playing with Marquis Teague and their recruitment is not viewed as an either/or situation.  Nonetheless, it appears that Wroten will get some Cal time on Tuesday.

 – Not content with only focusing on 2011, Calipari will visit five-star 2012 small forward JP Tokoto, a Milwaukee native ranked as the #4 player in Rivals’ rankings.  Tokoto has visited UK twice already and has a list of suitors as long as Matt’s toenails.  However, don’t get too excited as he doesn’t plan on making a selection anytime soon, according to this piece from Jody Demling.  Also, calm down there Mark Hamilton, Tokoto doesn’t use Facebook or Twitter.

 – Cal continued to get his 2012 on as he stopped in to see 6’8″ small forward Perry Ellis on Monday, according to Larry Vaught.  Ellis is regarded as one of the top prospects in his class and has drawn tons of interest already, including a much-publicized offer from in-state Kansas when he was a freshman shortly after the “Gillispie Request” from the NABC recommending coaches not offer scholarships to people who can’t drive yet.  On Monday, Cal was among a group of Bill Self, Rick Pitino and Frank Martin watching him work out.  Eddie Montgomery was likely there in spirit.

 – In terms of immediate news, Marquis Teague announced he would decide at 1:30 Thursday where he would play his college basketball in a press conference at his high school.  Depending on what day it is, the momentum swings between Kentucky and the Filthy Cards with those in the know, but the final word will come on Thursday.  Pray for our server.

 – On a likely unneeded note, Dallas sophomore Zach Peters will announce his college choice Wednesday.  In all of the press releases, Peters, who was ranked as the nation’s top 8th grader, has listed UK as a possible destination.  I have no idea if that is a likely possibility.  However, the chances of having Enes and Peters commit in the same period would make things a lot more entertaining around here.  Plus, he looks like Johnny Lawrence and four years of yelling “Finish him!” would make life a lot better.

 – Over on CBSSports.com, which happens to be short of a few handsome and talented bloggers at the moment, Gary Parrish has a piece on World Wide Wes and how overrated his involvement with UK is.  It also has his avatar above the  story if that’s a selling point (I’m talkign to you, BTI).

  – On a non-UK related note, every night you spend not watching LeBron James play basketball is another night of your life that you’ve wasted.  What he does is absolutely amazing and he does it over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

 – On another non-UK related note, the NFL Draft will feature a “red carpet special” with Whoopi Goldberg and Alyssa Milano.  I’ve said this before and I’ll stand firm on it.  Roger Goodell will ruin the NFL….unless, of course, you look forward to Whoopi asking Tim Tebow what Bible verses he’s wearing.

 – It’s 1:15 in the morning and Louisville’s new arena is still named the KFC Yum! Center.  So, at least we have that going for us.

 – Also, if you’re reading this Drew, it’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone, and I need you now.

 – Finally, we’ll end with this.  I spent part of Monday going through some of the old posts on KSR and reading some of the gems from years past and came across this post on April 19 of last year regarding the state of recruiting.  It’s as in-depth of a piece as you’ll find and is the type of quality work you come to expect from us here at KSR.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned throughout the day as we give you, arguably, the greatest day of content the internet has ever seen.  It’s going to be a good one.  See you in a few…
