Kentucky and Michigan State currently have quite the recruiting rivalry boiling. Mel Tucker’s program collected a head-to-head win on Tuesday when Georgia transfer Ameer Speed committed to the Spartans.

Speed was a four-star prospect in the class of 2017 out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood who committed to Georgia over Alabama, Oregon, and North Carolina shortly after Kirby Smart’s first season in Athens came to a close. At that time, Tucker was the defensive coordinator at UGA.

Ameer Speed spent five years in the SEC and started the first three games for Georgia in 2021 before five-star recruit Kelee Ringo took over the starting spot.

The 6-3 cornerback will now spend his super senior season in the Big Ten. The Spartans had one of the worst pass defenses in college football last season, and a starting position should be available for the high-profile transfer.

Yet again, Michigan State has once been active in the portal. Aaron Brule (Mississippi State) and Khris Bogle (Florida) will join Speed as the latest SEC transfers moving to East Lansing. Bogle was an EDGE player Kentucky showed some interest in earlier this offseason.

Per KSR’s Matt Jones, Ameer Speed was a target for the Wildcats and a player that figured to be a scheme fit in Brad White’s defense. The spring semester has started in Lexington, but the Wildcats are still looking secondary help.

Ameer Speed is off the table but Kentucky will still have options

The University of Kentucky has begun its spring semester and can no longer get players enrolled for spring practice. That takes the Wildcats out of the running for some late entrants into the portal who want to land somewhere right away.

However, most everyone should be starting school soon, and there will still be many options in the portal with more emerging towards the end of the spring semester and into the summer.

Kentucky has been linked to Colorado cornerback transfer Mekhi Blackmon and UCLA cornerback transfer Jay Shaw should get a ton of Power Five interest. Unfortunately, Mark Stoops and his coaching staff must play the waiting game right now.

The Wildcats need help at cornerback, offensive tackle, and wide receiver. The transfer portal must provide answers, but the waiting game might need to be played first.
