Today in “news that doesn’t really matter but is still making the rounds”, Anthony Davis has upset a portion of the Los Angeles Lakers faithful for some recent comments. The former Kentucky Wildcat was recently caught on camera saying he hasn’t “shot a basketball since maybe like, April 5. Probably like April 5.”

The Lakers’ season came to an end on April 10 during the final game of the 2021-22 season. Los Angeles finished with a 33-49 overall record, missing the postseason entirely. Davis last played for the Lakers on April 5 in an 11-point road loss to the Phoenix Suns in which he finished with 21 points and 13 rebounds in 35 minutes.

Almost immediately, the replies and reactions on social media became two-sided. One side correctly pointed out that Davis just recently said he takes a month off after the season ends then goes right into six weeks of straight weight training before getting back into the actual basketball portion of his offseason. Going by that timeline, Davis is on track to ramp back up his basketball activities as early as this coming week.

But the other side — as it usually goes with anything even remotely controversial on the internet — there were fans not so understanding of the Lakers’ $190 million man, who hasn’t exactly played up to expectations the last two seasons. Davis played just 40 games for the Lake Show a season ago and a mere 36 the year prior. In total, he’s only appeared in a hair over 40 percent of the franchise’s regular-season games across three seasons. Various injuries have plagued him of any consistency.

But with that in mind, it might not be a bad idea for Davis to take his time this offseason. Summer League is still a month away and training camp is even further along down the road. Most NBA players take off a significant amount of time following a grueling 82-game season. The Lakers need Davis as close to 100 percent as possible heading into a critical 2022-23 season for the franchise.
