April recruiting ban upheld
This little piece of info slipped through the cracks late last week, but it's still worth mentioning today. The NCAA upheld their ban on allowing college coaches to attend non-scholastic basketball tournaments in April in an effort to scout last minute prospects. Supporters of the ban, which has been in effect for a year now, said that April is too important of a month academically and say that coaches have enough opportunities to scout players throughout the year.
While I applaud the NCAA for seemingly taking a stand against the AAU system (as small as it may be), you have to still think there might be a better way to sanction spring recruiting. A number of players who are either late bloomers or back up plans for some schools use that period to get a scholarship and now you have to wonder if these guys might not get that opportunity. Without this late period, UK would not have been able to land the superstar tandem of Shagari Alleyne and Woo.
