Due to Jason Hatcher’s frequent 2015 absences, outside linebacker Josh Allen was forced into action as a true freshman. Truth be known, Allen played his rookie season weighing close to 210 pounds. A productive offseason now has the sophomore tipping the scales between 235 and 240 with added strength.
Josh Allen played in twelve games finishing with 4 tackles, 0.5 QB sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss, and an interception a year ago. Kentucky will be counting on Allen to be a pass rush specialist. This role is a familiar one. As a senior at Montclair High School in New Jersey, he totaled 75 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and an astounding, state-leading 22.5 QB sacks. Allen played his first three prep seasons in Alabama where he was a 1st team all-state performer at receiver for Abbeville High School.
Recruiting services flat out dropped the ball when evaluating Josh Allen. Most rated him as a 2-star, some even listed him as an unevaluated prospect. Regardless, he played as a true freshman in the Southeastern Conference and is listed as UK’s starter at outside linebacker. I raved about him on National Signing Day and still believe that he has a chance to be a very good SEC linebacker.
In 2015, the top two SEC, sophomore sack leaders were Vanderbilt’s Zach Cunningham with 4.5 and Alabama’s Rashaan Evans’ 4. For Allen and Kentucky to have a successful season, Josh will need to total a reachable 4.5-6 QB sacks.
