Big Blue Sports Rundown: Goin' Back to Cali Edition

Every week we'll do a quick rundown of the UK Athletic Schedule. Yes, this is just reposting info you can find at the UK Athletics Website. At least it'll be reposted in a nice concise manner. This initial post will be a little less concise so we can review the seasons thus far.

LL COOL J, MuthaFarkas!

Women's Tennis -- The ladies are competing in the ITA Championships, the biggest fall competition for intercollegiate tennis. Representing Kentucky in the single's competition is sophomore Megan Broderick, who is ranked 55th in the ITA's pre-season national rankings. In the doubles, we'll have senior Carolina Escamilla and junior Christine Johnston, who are ranked 16th in the preseason rankings.

These ladies will need to keep up the winning ways. Earlier this month, the UK squad won two championship matches at the 22nd Annual Roberta Alison Classic.

The ITA Women's Championship matches start on Tuesday at Pacific Palisades, California. Let's hope the girls can manage the smog and pull out some big victories for themselves.

Men's Soccer -- On Wednesday, October 1st, the Men's Soccer team will be heading east to Huntington, West Virginia to play Marshall. Also on tap this week is Xavier, who will be playing the Wildcats in Lexington on Saturday, October 4th at 7 PM.

Currently standing at 4 wins, 2 losses and 2 ties, the Men's Soccer Wildcats have been performing fairly well. They have lost their only game against a ranked opponent, dropping a 1-0 decision against then-ranked #7 UC Santa Barbara. The last two games the Wildcats has not allowed a goal, but have not scored a goal either. Junior Goalkeeper Dan Williams made two crazy diving saves to keep UNC-Asheville scoreless last Saturday. Junior defender Barry Rice was recently named to CollegeSoccerNews.com's Team of the Week due to his play against Michigan and Alabama A&M.

Women's Volleyball -- Our Volleyball team has been a winning machine, recently racking up a 3 sets to 0 sweep against LSU. Despite a 14-2 overall record, the Wildcats are not nationally ranked. They did get 3 votes in the last coaches poll.

This week the ladies take on Tennessee in Knoxville on Tuesday, October 1st. The Volleyball Wildcats also play Auburn in Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, October 5th at 1:30 PM. Next week is make-or-break time for the girls, since they will be playing #10 Florida in Gainesville, and Coaches' Poll Vote-getters South Carolina in Columbia. To apply a terrible cliché, let's hope the team this week doesn't get caught looking ahead to next week. (I'm so terribly sorry.)

Cross Country -- The Men's team finished 7th (out of 24 teams) and the Women finished 5th (out of 21 teams) during the Meet of Champions on September 20th. The women sat out senior Jenna Ortman, who had finished in the top 10 of the previous meet.

The Cross Country team will be competing in the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, October 3rd. Another strong team performance in South Bend will be necessary to ensure that both men's and women's teams are invited to the NCAA Regionals. After the meet on Friday, the team will have two more weeks to prepare for the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind on October 18th.

Women's Soccer -- This week the Wildcats get into the tough meat of their SEC schedule. First up is the South Carolina Gamecocks visiting Lexington on Friday, October 3rd at 7 PM. The Gamecocks are just outside the top-25 in the NCAA Coaches Poll. The following Sunday, October 5th, #16 Florida rolls into town for a 1 PM showdown.

Our girls started the season with 2 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie -- with losses coming to currently-ranked #10 Duke and #3 North Carolina. Since starting into the SEC schedule, the team has turned it around, winning the latest game against Alabama. If Kentucky can come away this weekend with some points, they might make some noise in the conference. (Yet another cliché. I guess I'm having a case of the monday's.)

Men's Football -- At Alabama. Rich Brooks thinks Roll Tide is bullshit.

Women's Golf -- Out of 13 teams, the Wildcats finished 6th at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate tournament on September 22nd through 24th. Senior Mallory Blackwelder shot 75-74-76 to tie for 17th overall. The ladies head to Chapel Hill this weekend (October 3rd through the 5th) to compete in the Lady Tar Heel Invitational.
