Brandon White brings elite speed to Liam Coen's juiced-up offense

How many times throughout Kentucky’s history has the program had not one, but two of the fastest high schoolers in America? That’ll happen when the new era of elaborate playcalling takes over an offense. First, it was Jordan Anthony out of Mississippi, and now it’s Brandon White out of Ohio.

Let’s be perfectly clear about one thing before we move any further: Brandon White doesn’t choose Kentucky earlier on Friday without the results that Liam Coen’s offense has put up through the first four games of the 2021 season. And how could you blame him? The passing game under head coach Mark Stoops has been virtually non-existent, particularly over the last few seasons. Signing up for *maybe* a few targets every Saturday would be tough to do for someone with speed and talent like White.

But Coen has revitalized the offense and it’s quickly paying off in the recruiting world, beginning with the transfer of Wan’Dale Robinson from Nebraska. Kentucky is currently 38th in the country in total offense–still prioritizing the run, but consistently busting out big plays through the air with Robinson as the focus. White took note and saw more than enough.

That actually was a big impact, seeing that and seeing what he’s doing (on offense),” White said about Coen. “Although hearing it from him while getting recruited, for him to do it and put up the numbers and do the things that everybody else sees on Saturdays and things like that, it was a no-brainer for me. I see myself striving and being great for sure.

His offense is probably one of the best college offenses I’ve seen so far.”

Kentucky envisions White filling the void that could be left by star wide-receiver Wan’Dale Robinson as soon as this offseason. Those are lofty expectations for a high school senior. But White believes he can meet them.

“I had a couple of times I got to talk to Wan’Dale and the things that he’s doing and the things that Liam Coen is doing on offense and what he’s brought,” White said. “It’s for sure motivation.”

A “well-timed” source even told KSR host Matt Jones during White’s commitment that White is “faster” than Wan’Dale Robinson. White is only about 5-foot-9 right now, but he possesses Olympic-level speed: a 4.28-second 40-yard dash and a 10.3-second 100-yard dash. That kind of quickness cannot be coached.

KSR’s Adam Luckett broke down exactly what White will bring to Coen’s offense, which you can check out here, but it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out at this point. White has burners and Kentucky is going to put them to good use.

“You’re gonna see an electric player,” White said about what Kentucky is getting. “You’re gonna see a guy who is on fire every day, loves to compete, and is going to bring that popcorn-ready type energy, because I love to entertain.”
