Bruce Pearl Wants to Throw a Barbecue... And Invite the SEC Network

by:Corey Nichols05/31/14
Pearl You remember the jokes, right?  Bruce Pearl threw a barbecue at his place and invited Aaron Craft, and got in big trouble.  It cost him his job at Tennessee, exiled him (temporarily) to employment at a grocery store, and still hangs over his head as he begins his tenure at Auburn. So why not do it again? The man's gotta be crazy, right?  Of course he is, but the reasons for this barbecue, aside from the brisket, are far more legitimate.  We've always liked Bruce Pearl for being exceptionally goofy, and imminently aware of just how ridiculous he was.  Like him or not, he's always been in on the joke, because he wrote the punchline.  It stands to reason, then, that the only way Pearl can get out from under his self-imposed cloud is to joke about it. According to Kyle Ringo of Yahoo.com, Bruce wants to throw another barbecue, inviting the cameras, and scrutiny, of the entire SEC Network.  They would televise exactly "what goes into a Pearl barbecue," Why, exactly?  To show that he's over it.  To show recruits that he's the same boisterous, yet brilliant basketball mind he was at Tennessee.  And because we'd all watch it.  And he knows that, and wants to use it to gain momentum at Auburn, a school so football-minded that it makes Ohio State look like a basketball school. It's all so ridiculous that it just might work.  Seeing the recreation of his most famously bad idea is like being Pinky asking Brain what he's going to do tonight. The same thing he does every night.  Well, not exactly the same; according to the host himself, there might be some minor changes. "Got to make sure the guest list is what it needs to be." Don't ever change, Bruce.
