BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Did Randall Cobb get the ball enough for you?

by:Bryan1309/07/10
Name the #1 complaint last season from fans and you will almost unanimously get the answer that Randall Cobb did not get the ball enough or was not used in key situations nearly enough.  So, here is a quick breakdown of the Louisville game and how many times Randall Cobb touched the ball or was thrown at: 1st QUARTER Total Plays (Excluding Punts): 19 R. Cobb Rushes: 2 (22 yards) R. Cobb Catches: 0 R. Cobb Thrown At: 1 Total Plays Cobb Involved: 3/19 (15.8%) 2nd QUARTER Total Plays (Excluding Punts): 9 R. Cobb Rushes: 1 (51 yards) R. Cobb Catches: 2 (19 yards) R. Cobb Thrown At: 0 Total Plays Cobb Involved: 3/9 (33.3%) 3rd QUARTER Total Plays (Excluding Punts): 24 R. Cobb Rushes: 0 R. Cobb Catches: 0 R. Cobb Thrown At: 2 Total Plays Cobb Involved: 2/24 (8.3%) 4th QUARTER Total Plays (Excluding Punts): 12 R. Cobb Rushes: 1 (7 yards) R. Cobb Passes: 1 (16 yards) R. Cobb Catches: 0 R. Cobb Thrown At: 1 Total Plays Cobb Involved: 3/12 (25.0%) Special Teams Plays Kickoffs Returned: 2 (59 yards) Punts Returned: 1 (-8 yards) OVERALL Total Offensive Plays: 64 R. Cobb Rushes: 4 (80 yards) R. Cobb Catches: 2 (19 yards) R. Cobb Passes: 1 (16 yards) R. Cobb Thrown At: 4 Total Offensive Plays Cobb Involved: 11/64 (17.2%) Randall Cobb either rushed, passed, caught, or was thrown at a total of 17.2% of the time in UK's win.  Now obviously Derrick Locke will generally touch the ball more often than Cobb since his is a running back, but Locke touched the ball 27 times on Saturday.  Randall Cobb touched it 10 times, including punt and kickoff returns.  So, did Cobb get enough touches on Saturday for you? And it should be pointed out that sometimes opposing defenses will completely eliminate Cobb in the passing game, which will limit his touches.  UL may have done this, I didn't breakdown the game film.  But Cobb only touched the ball TWICE in the 2nd half, one of which was a key run in the last drive that basically iced the game.  Personally, I thought Cobb was included enough in the game after it ended, but after crunching the numbers, I may have to reconsider.  When your best player in a decade in only getting a look every 5 plays or so, but your running back (also a great player) gets it 26 times, I just wonder whether that was the gameplan or just UL's defense.  Oh well, we won, we dominated (score be damned), and you can see the potential of this team.  Exciting time for UK football.
