BTI's Rants and Ramblings: Wednesday Defensive Breakdown (Vanderbilt)

[caption id="attachment_208604" align="alignnone" width="480"]Photo by UKAthletics Photo by UKAthletics[/caption] 1st Down Pass: 11-15, 105 yards Run: 13 rushes for 98 yards (7.5 ypc) Combined Season Statistics Pass: 47-84, 735 yards, 7 TD, 4 INT, 2 sacks for -18 yards Run: 116 rushes for 541 yards (4.7 ypc), 3 TD RECAP: Vandy actually punished the Cats on 1st down all game long, both through the air and the ground.  The good thing is the Cats kept them out of the endzone on these sets of plays but with over 7 yards per play on these 28 plays, the UK defense wasn't strong in this scenario. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––— 2nd Down and Long (6 yards or more) Pass: 0-4, 1 sack for -7 yards Run: 9 rushes for 33 yards (3.7 ypc) Combined Season Statistics Pass: 27-49, 328 yards, 1 TD, 2 sacks for -14 yards Run: 55 rushes for 273 yards (5.0 ypc), 1 TD RECAP: Beautiful defense for the Cats.  As mentioned above, the 1st down defense was suspect but the Cats made up for it with a dominant performance on 2nd down. 2nd Down and Short (5 yards or less) Pass: 2-2, 5 yards Run: 3 rushes for 23 yards (7.7 ypc) Combined Season Statistics Pass: 9-11, 58 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT Run: 39 rushes for 220 yards (5.6 ypc), 1 TD RECAP: More of the same dominance.  Cats weren't playing against the best offense in the world but they still did what they needed to to win the game. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––— 3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more) Pass: 4-7, 31 yards, 2 sacks for -8 yards (converted 3 of 9) Run: 2 rushes for 9 yards (4.5 ypc) (converted 0 of 2) Combined Season Statistics Pass: 17-29, 246 yards, 1 INT, 2 sacks for -8 yards (converted 14 of 31) Run: 12 rushes for 62 yards (5.2 ypc) (converted 2 of 12) RECAP: Better defense than normal for UK here but Vandy still able to complete a couple long passes to gain 1st downs.  UK did get some nice pressure on the QB though. 3rd Down and Short (5 yards or less) Pass: 1 sack for -7 yards (converted 0 of 1) Run: No plays Combined Season Statistics Pass: 10-16, 109 yards, 1 TD, 7 sacks for -43 yards (converted 10 of 23) Run: 23 rushes for 131 yards (6.1 ypc), 2 TD (converted 18 of 23) RECAP: Only 1 time did Vandy face a 3rd and short and UK sacked the QB, so all in all, a perfect set of downs here.
