Former Kentucky forward Cam’Ron Fletcher’s sophomore campaign has come to an end at Florida State. The 6-foot-7, 215-pound wing suffered a season-ending thumb injury in the Seminoles’ win over Notre Dame on Wednesday.

FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton announced Fletcher underwent surgery on his thumb this morning, an injury suffered while diving for a loose ball.

Prior to the injury, Fletcher averaged 6.8 points (47.5% FG, 36.2% 3PT, 71.4% FT), 3.4 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.9 steals in 16.3 minutes per contest. The sophomore forward had nine games of double-figure scoring, including a four-game stretch in February where he scored 61 total points (15.25 PPG). He finished in double figures every game he played at least 25 minutes (five).

Fletcher has also emerged as a high-level defender perimeter, recording seven games of at least two steals, including three games of at least four steals.

The former four-star recruit signed with Kentucky out of high school, choosing the Wildcats over Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina, and Alabama, among others. In eight games as a freshman, Fletcher scored 15 total points, grabbed 15 rebounds, had five steals and shot 53.8% from the field.

The St. Louis native decided to enter the transfer portal shortly after Kentucky’s disappointing 9-16 season came to a close.

“Cam came so far as a teammate and as a player this season,” John Calipari said following Fletcher’s decision to hit the portal. “He improved in all areas and I wish he would have had more opportunities to show everything he worked on. He matured as a person this season and I know he will have great success in whatever path he chooses. I support his decision and I will do anything to help him with his career.”

Fletcher ultimately chose Florida State over the likes of Georgetown, LSU, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, UCLA, USC and Washington, among others.

“We are excited and looking forward to welcoming Cam into our basketball family,” Hamilton said upon signing Fletcher.  “After visiting with Cam and his family, I feel very confident that as he immerses himself in our culture here at Florida State, he will have the opportunity to excel and reach his full potential.

“Cam has tremendous basketball skills; he fits into our offensive system and understands our defensive philosophy very well.  We are looking forward to getting him to Tallahassee and beginning his academic and basketball career as a Seminole.”
