Catch Fringe Sports At It's New Time Slot... Now!

by:Will Lentz02/14/11

Adding to the theme of  “Change We Can Believe In,” around here today, Fringe Sports will be joining BTI in receiving scheduling change.  Partially because I’m going through withdrawal symptoms from not writing about the Rifle team last week, and partially because all the important fringe stuff seems to happen on the weekend – making it 5 days old to post on a friday.  Therefore I’m changing the Fringe Sports posts to Monday at six. Hopefully you will find a way to cope.  Oh, you say you didn’t even know there was a Fringe Sports post?  Eh, bugger off already.

1.) Let’s start with my favorite, the Rifle team.  While Matthew did an excellent job filling in for me on Friday, he did manage to let the rifle team’s huge success earlier slip by, and has promptly been signed up for target practice.  Two weekends ago the Shot-Cats (no longer just the name of Drew Franklins Japanese Bobtail,) out shot number 1 WVU, a huge step for the program. Kentucky still only has one loss to their name, and clinched an NCAA berth this past weekend by placing first in the qualifying round.  The championships begin March 9th.

2.) As was mentioned yesterday, UK Hoops bounced back from back to back losses to Tennessee and South Carolina by eeking out a win against LSU in uniforms that rivaled the Men’s Denim ones from years past.  UK Hoops is now 8-4 in the SEC with four winnable games to go before the SEC Tournament.  UK Hoops is ranked 19th, which marks the second week they have been ranked above the Mens team.  I think.

3.) More props to UK Hoops as Senior Victoria Dunlap was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30 list.  Dunlap has had a great season so far, and a lot of the programs continued success this year will ride on how far she can carry the team in tough games.

4.) The Kentucky men’s tennis team has continued to do well.  They are ranked 12th in the nation and have just come off a big sweep of no. 38 Miami (FL) and Cleveland State. Not only did they win both match ups, they won handily, taking all 7 matches against Miami and 6 of 7 against Cleveland State.  The Wildcats are now 4-2 against top 50 opponents this season.

5.) A bit of a personal note, but fringe nonetheless, Kentucky High School regionals were held this past weekend for Swimming and Diving, and the team I help coach (Lafayette,) had a pretty successful run.  We only have one diver – and I have literally nothing to do with her coaching – but Rebecca Hamperian dominated the field by like, 200 points.  She will most likely go on to win state, and be awesome at everything else she does.  But this year for a change, the swim team will be sending a few relay teams and a few girls to compete in individual events at State this year too, so congratulations to them.  #OperationSwim
