Celebrate America's Independence with Kentucky Sports Radio

Happy Birthday America!  Today marks the 241st anniversary of America's independence from the tea-drinking redcoats from across the pond.  Please celebrate accordingly with fireworks, hot dogs, hamburgers and a thank you to the military that has made sure America has remained independent for 241 years. Last, but certainly not least, don't forget to read KSR.  Things will be a little different than normal around the website, but we'll still be bringing you updates from across the Big Blue Nation throughout the day, starting with the Wildcats representing America in Egypt.

Team USA Finishes the Group Phase in Egypt

After receiving their first day off in Egypt, Team USA will wrap up the pool play portion of the FIBA U19 World Cup against Italy at 10:00.  After they win today (I'm going to go ahead and write it down) the real tournament starts tomorrow in the round of 16. Tai Wynyard's New Zealand team is fighting for a spot in the tournament against Argentina at 12:15.

Bam is Ballin'

Bam Adebayo is arguably the best player in the Orlando Summer League.  In his third game he had his best double-double yet: 29 points, 11 rebounds.  He also showed off this fancy Euro-step.

Impressive Summer League Debuts

The 76ers lost to the Celtics on a Jayson Tatum buzzer-beater, but a pair of Wildcats still performed well.  Alex Poythress started at power forward and came up just short of a double-double, finishing the game with 11 points and 8 rebounds.  Aaron Harrison entered off the bench and played 20 minutes.  He didn't shoot too well (3-of-8), but played aggressively and got to the free throw line (5-of-7) to finish with 12 points. Isaiah Briscoe played 14 minutes, but struggled.  He missed both of the shots he took, turned it over four times and had a -8 point differential.  On a more positive note, he added 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Summer League Schedule

  • 1:00 -- (Bam Adebayo) Miami Heat vs. (Derek Willis) Detroit Pistons
  • 3:00 -- Indiana Pacers vs. Dallas Mavericks
  • 5:00 -- Charlotte Hornets vs. (Dakrai Johnson) OKC Thunder
You can watch all of the Summer League action on NBATV.  The Orlando Summer League concludes with tournament play Thursday.  In the Utah Summer League, the 76ers' three Wildcats return to the court tonight at 9:00 p.m.  The rest of the league takes the court in Las Vegas beginning Friday.

Hot Dogs are Coming

As we do every year on the Fourth of July, KSR will LIVE Blog Nathan's World Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.  The event starts at noon on ESPN2.  My money is on Shannon the Dude. https://twitter.com/ShannonTheDude/status/881289116964532225

Scott Padgett Signs Extension

The former UK All-American signed a five-year deal to retain the Samford head coaching job through the 2021-22 season.  Padgett earned the extension.  Last year in just his third season as head coach he led them to their first winning record in 11 years.

Jarren Williams is Good

When Williams re-committed to Kentucky, the phrase "program changing player" was often used to describe the decision.  The "wait till signing day" skeptics naturally balked.  I'll admit, even I was hesitant to crown a camp QB as a messiah, but holy moly this kid just continues to look better and better.  He was one of the best quarterbacks at The Opening because he was making throws like this:

Water Roller Coasters are Neat

I always thought the term "water roller coaster" was an oxymoron.  Turns out, it's a three-word phrase to simply say wet-adrenaline-filled-awesomeness.  Holiday World's Wildebeest and Mammoth are unlike any other amusement park ride I've ever been on and they exceeded expectations.  Their new roller coaster, the Thunderbird, is a pretty spectacular time as well.  I'm a fan of the artist formerly known as Santa Claus Land.

New Kentucky Sports Radio Returns Tomorrow

After another "best of" show today, tomorrow we're getting the band back together.  After an offseason hiatus, Freddie, Jared, Drew and I are prepared to talk football for two hours on tomorrow's Kentucky Sports Radio.  You've got football questions, we've got answers. "Let them eat pancakes."  -- John Schlarman 60 days till football season.
