Championship Week Begins!!!!

vmi.jpeg Saturday morning and we are ready for the best time of the Spring....Championship Week! We here at Kentucky Sports Radio are getting prepared for our big weekend of basketball action, starting with today, where we will watch FOUR big championship games. To get you ready, here is a little preview.... Big South Championship --- Winthrop v. VMI While many of you were spending your Thursday night with your family or out with your friends, I was doing what any basketball geek would do. I was watching the Big South semifinals.....and you know what, I liked it. VMI, who has a losing record for the season, plays a style of basketball known as "shoot it immediately and play no defense." That style may not be conducive to wins, but it is conducive to entertainment. They run, they gun and a guy named Reggie Williams leads the nation in scoring....catch them. And oh yeah, they are playing Winthrop, only one of the better non-major conference teams in America.....almost beat UT last year and will give a 3 or 4 seed a major run this year. Should be entertaining. Atlantic Sun Championship --- ETSU v. Belmont Another game between two teams that you may know little about, but you should nonetheless remember for ages past. ETSU was once blessed with past glory when they had the great Keith "Mr" Jennings, who held lead the Moccassins to an NCAA upset in the early 90s. ETSU was also the college closest to where I grew up, meaning that high school kids often talked about partying at ETSU on weekends.....only I never went.....I was preparing for future blogs by watching "Sports Overtime" on WYMT. ETSU plays Belmont, best known for being the favorite school of Vince Gill and being one of the few universities in America to voluntarily allow their coach to be on Kentucky Sports Radio, last year before their early season contest in Rupp Arena. These teams are the top two in the conference so it should be a battle. Southern Championship ---- Davidson v College of Charleston This was supposed to be the game of the day....and then Appalachian State went out and lost in the Semifinals, thus making what may have been the overall game of the day, a little less interesting. Appy St. now has to wait for an at-large, which likely wont come, even though they have beaten Vanderbilt and Wichita State. As for the championship, Davidson is the better team and has a real shot to make a tournament splash. But first, they have to beat College of Charleston, who is making a return to the conference final in their first year under Bobby Cremins. Watch this game....if C of C makes the tournament, it helps Kentucky, who of course beat the team earlier in the season. Ohio Valley Championship ---- Austin Peay v. Eastern Kentucky The last game of the night is of course the one closest to us as the Peay (live from Clarksville, Tn) takes on our beloved Colonels straight outta Richmond. I know nothing about these two teams this year, but I will remind everyone that you should support Eastern for a variety of reasons. First, it is a Kentucky team and we all love the Bluegrass state, including the party schools that make up the outer level fo the Kentucky educational system. Second, Dan Patrick went to EKU, so when they make some noise, we get to hear his stories of his year in Richmond. And third, yes Kentucky beat Eastern this year, so if the Colonels make the tournament, it once again helps the team going into the NCAAs. Put your EKU gear on and yell against the Peay. We got the show today from 10 Am- Noon on 1570 and 1600 AM today and will have more information throughout the day. Have a bright Saturday.....
