“So what happened with Chris Rodriguez?”

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve been asked that question over the last month, I could retire early. Almost a month after Kentucky’s star running back made headlines for the wrong reasons, I still do not have a definitive answer to that question. I can share a sentiment with the BBN that the UK football coaches often tell their players after a tough game: “Things are never as good as they seem, or as bad as they seem.”

What We Know About Chris Rodriguez

After graduating from UK, Rodriguez was arrested May 8 in the early morning hours on charges of driving under the influence and careless driving. Later that week he failed to appear in court and another warrant was issued for his arrest. Less than 24 hours later the warrant was set aside by a judge after a miscommunication caused his attorneys to miss the arraignment.

On May 27 KSR’s Matt Jones reported that Rodriguez’s future at Kentucky is “up in the air.” Jones made it clear the matter was unrelated to the DUI arrest, but could not provide further details.

“Even if he is on the team, I think it is almost certain he will not be playing in the first few games,” he added. “He may not play all year, but would almost certainly not be playing in the first four or five games, which would include the Florida game.”

The Latest on C-Rod

Rodriguez has been spotted around the Joe Craft Football Training Facility this week as players report back to campus for summer workouts. Initially some feared Rodriguez may not be available for the entire 2022 season; however, after conversations with people close to the program, I do not believe that is the case.

What’s Next

The sentiment surrounding Rodriguez’s status is no longer dire; however, it remains up in the air. Rodriguez must still reach a conclusion on his DUI case and settle his other matter. It’s certain he will miss some time, but how much is unclear. A four-game suspension is this humble reporter’s best estimate.

For now, we will continue to play the waiting game. Hopefully, there will be some sort of resolution before Mark Stoops takes the podium at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on July 20.
