He was 91.

Bowden announced he was diagnosed with a terminal condition in July, he wouldn’t disclose what the condition was, but he knew he was at peace.

“I’ve always tried to serve God’s purpose for my life, on and off the field, and I am prepared for what is to come,” Bowden said in a statement announcing the condition. “My wife Ann and our family have been life’s greatest blessing. I am at peace.”

Bowden coached Florida State into a power from 1976-2009, a stretch that saw Bowden pace college football with 10 straight consecutive bowl game wins and two National Championships. Bowden also had Florida State finishing in the top five every year between 1987 to 2000.

Bowden only squared off against the Wildcats once in the 2007 Gaylord Music City Bowl where Kentucky handed Bowden his first Bowl loss ever in the month of December for back-to-back Bowl wins. Bowden would announce his retirement two seasons later.

The list of accolades for Bobby Bowden could span hours, but to anyone who’s ever loved the game of college football, Bowden was one of the prime examples of a players coach who found a way to win. His impact on the sport will be left forever and college football fans alike are eternally grateful.

RIP Coach Bobby Bowden.
