Coming For That #1 Spot

by:Patrick Barker01/08/10
1seed With conference play opening tomorrow, how much work does UK have to do to secure a #1 seed in the Big Dance?  I know, I know, there's still a lot of basketball to be played, but at this point, it seems like UK is in control of its own #1 seed destiny.  Only problem is that the rest of the SEC is so weak that the Cats can't afford to stumble too many times before they'll potentially be knocked off that 1-line.  Currently, in the Top 30 of the RPI the conference breakdown looks like this: Big East: 6 (all in Top 15) Big 12: 3 Big 10: 3 ACC: 2 A10: 4 Pac 10: 0 SEC: 1 Others: 11 As you see, outside of the Pac-10, the SEC is, so far, the weakest major conference. To me, that says UK can't afford to lose more than 3  games in conference (including the SEC Tournament) without losing grasp of a #1 seed. Of course, I could be totally wrong, as I am no Joe Lunardi.  But the SEC currently has less teams in the RPI Top 30 than the A10 (4), Mountain West (2), Ivy League (2) and the West Coast Conference (2).  I don't really predict UK will lose 3 games in conference, but keeping an eye on the RPI is a great indicator of seedings in the NCAA tournament.  You can follow real-time RPI here.  Guys, bookmark that link.  It makes you sound uber-smart when debating with your buddies.  Gals, you should also bookmark that link.  With that info, you almost become omnipotent over the male species.
