Cutter Boley honors past Kentucky QBs with custom Governor's Cup cleats

Drew Franklinby: Drew Franklin13 hours agoDrewFranklinKSR

Last year, Cutter Boley made his first career start in the Governor’s Cup, joining a small club of freshmen QBs to play against the Cards. This year, he returns to the rivalry game in his redshirt-freshman season as the team’s unequivocal starter and leader of the team.

A Kentuckian and lifelong fan, Boley knows the significance of the rivalry and recognizes its history. He’ll pay tribute to that history and the Kentucky-born QBs before him with a pair of custom cleats on his feet at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium.

The Hodgenville, Kentucky, native collaborated with Billy Hobbs of True Blue Customs to design a pair that recognizes six Kentucky-born quarterbacks who shaped the rivalry long before he arrived: Tim Couch, Jared Lorenzen, Andre Woodson, Patrick Towles, Billy Jack Haskins, and Bill Ransdell. Each of their jerseys is hand-painted on the shoes that Boley will wear in his second Governor’s Cup start.

Boley’s breakout season

He still needs a Governor’s Cup win on his resume, but Boley has had a breakout redshirt-freshman year since taking over for Zach Calzada three games into the season. In nine games and eight starts since the promotion, he has completed 185-of-275 passes for 2,060 yards and 15 touchdowns, plus two rushing TDs and three SEC Freshman of the Week awards.

Last week, Boley broke Jared Lorenzen’s freshman record for passing touchdowns against SEC opponents, throwing his 11th and 12th at Vanderbilt to tie and surpass Lorenzen’s record. He is also on pace to break Lorenzen’s school record for completion percentage by a freshman. Currently, he is second on the school’s single-season mark behind Tim Couch.

Boley did not play well in last year’s blowout loss to Louisville. This year, though, the circumstances are different, and he’ll carry Lorenzen, Couch, and four other greats with him on his cleats.
