Daytona 500

by:Matt Jones02/19/06

Today is one of my favorite sports days of the year. The Daytona 500 begins in about 30 minutes. We are upon the five year anniversary of the moment that really launched Nascar into the national spotlight, the death of Dale Earnhardt. Today the sport can make a serious claim to be the 2nd or 3rd most popular sport in the land and its undercoverage by national media outlets is bizarre.

As for today, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Elliott Sadluh are the likely favorites. I want to see how the Petty cars do (I have a soft spot for Kyle), what absurd celebrities are involved (the Grand Marshall looks to be a partially drunk James Caan) and what national figure will look bizarrely out of place (sometimes known as the “Whoopi Goldberg award”). Even if you hate Nascar, it is a good event….and is so good that I will turn away from luge.
