This afternoon’s opening session of the KHSAA Sweet 16 features two of the state’s top players that you should be keeping an eye on. The opening game tips off right now (at noon), and features Madison Central guard Dominique Hawkins. We’ve talked a lot about Hawkins here at KSR, a senior and Kentucky Mr. Basketball candidate. Orlando Antigua has visited at least one of his practices and he is the cousin of Marquis Estill. Hawkins has already been offered a preferred walk-on spot at Louisville, but he says that Kentucky is his dream school. He has been already offered a scholarship at Morehead State, Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech and there’s been some interest from Indiana, Illinois and Arkansas among others.

Shortly after Dominique Hawkins and Madison Central take on Wayne County, Holmes will face Pleasure Ridge Park to wrap up today’s afternoon session at Rupp. A guy you should start paying attention to in this game is Holmes SOPHOMORE guard James Bolden (no known relation to William, aka Stone Cold Willow), who has already been offered a scholarship at Xavier. Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky and Ohio have also been involved in his recruitment. Bolden is a little on the short side, but keep in mind he’s a sophomore and has some time to grow. Bolden has developed a nice floater which allows him to shoot over taller defenders, and if he were to have a growth spurt he could become a very coveted recruit. Is Bolden good enough to possibly play at Kentucky in the future? Judge for yourselves:

If Madison Central and Holmes each advance, Hawkins and Bolden will face off against each other tomorrow at noon. In the past, the state tournament has been the same week as the first weekend of the NCAA tournament. Since that is not the case this year, I would expect a number of Division I college coaches to be in attendance throughout the week.

As we predicted, John Calipari, Kenny Payne and Orlando Antigua are courtside at Rupp to watch Madison Central’s Dominique Hawkins.
