Eastern Kentucky blown out at Marshall in season opener

Walt Wells came away empty-handed in his head coaching debut at Eastern Kentucky, as the Colonels suffered a 59-0 beatdown at Marshall to open the season.
Coming in as 24.5-point underdogs, Marshall nearly covered the spread by the end of the first quarter, leading the Colonels 21-0 after 15 minutes of play. The Herd beat that spread just a few minutes later on a two-yard touchdown pass with 10:02 to go in the second quarter. They'd ultimately lead 38-0 at the half with 392 total yards compared to just 61 total for the Colonels.
Overall, EKU finished the day with an abysmal 166 total yards, including just 80 through the air. Meanwhile, Marshall finished with 627 total yards, including a phenomenal 307-yard, four-touchdown, zero-pick performance from redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Wells.
EKU starting quarterback Parker McKinney threw for 71 yards (7-10) and an interception, while backup Dakota Allen added nine yards on 3-5 passing in the second half.
On the ground, Quentin Pringle led the Colonels with 39 yards on six carries, followed by 33 yards on 15 carries for Alonzo Booth and 15 yards on three carries for Allen.
In terms of explosive plays, EKU finished with just three plays of 20 yards or more: a 23-yard run by Pringle, a 22-yard pass from McKinney to Keyion Dixon for 22 yards, and a 28-yard pass from McKinney to Jackson Beerman. As for the opposition, the Herd completed nine scoring drives - eight touchdowns and one field goal - with zero punts, with the only two drives leading to zero points coming at both end-of-half situations.
Back on August 21, Eastern Kentucky opted to ditch the OVC's spring season and instead decided to move forward with eight non-conference games in the fall. Following today's loss, the Colonels will head back to West Virginia next weekend to take on the Mountaineers in Morgantown at 12 p.m. ET on FS1.
