First day on job, Kiffin already hitting the big-time

by:Thomas Beisner12/01/08
Tennessee moved forward with the hiring of the inexperienced former USC offensive coordinator and Raiders head coach, Lane Kiffin, today.  But, before he could start to assemble a staff of mythical proportions (Ed Orgeron! Monte Kiffin! Vince Lombardi!) or even figure out how to spend his $2 million annual salary, he was officially acknowledged as an SEC big boy when he was accused of recruiting violations by Steve Spurrier. It seems that Kiffin contacted Gamecock target Jarvis Giles, the #2 all-purpose back in the country and a former UT commit, the day before he was introduced as the Vols top man. Apparently the NCAA makes you pass some sort of recruiting certification test or something to be allowed to place these calls. Jeez, c'mon Spurrier. Lay off the guy. I mean, he's so cute! And he's from a football family! And he's going to be the greeeeeatest football coach in the whole wide world because he's the bestest recruiter ever! He's from a football family!
