Of course, when you think about Arkansas basketball, most think about Nolan Richardson and 40 minutes of hell. I'm young, and before I realized that I was supposed to hate Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina, I knew I was supposed to hate Arkansas.
Their peak coincided with the time when I was started to watch the games more as a fan and less as a kid wanting to please her dad. Richardson took the Razorbacks to 3 final fours in the nineties, an overlooked accomplishment not only because of Kentucky and Duke's success in the same decade but also because of the unfortunate end of Richardson's term at the school.
Richardson would come back from the coaching grave to avenge his 7-12 record against the Cats (and his 1-7 record in the SEC tournament), this time in the form of his former player and assistant Mike Anderson. Anderson's UAB squad stunned the Cats in the second round of the 2004 tournament, employing what Richardson called "40 minutes of hell part 2". Yeah, except Cat fans' hell lasted about nine more months waiting for the next season to start.
But Kentucky and Hogs had a ton of great, high intensity games during the nineties including this one that included a rare Jeff Shepard technical:
