6-0 Frederick Douglass Broncos defeated 4-1 Scott County Cardinals 41-0 in front of a packed stadium in Georgetown on Friday night. The Broncos’ victory extended the school’s winning streak to six in the heated rivalry matchup. Douglass jumped out to a quick 14-0 first-quarter lead following a 70-yard touchdown pass from Cole Carpenter to Tylon Webb and a Cameron Dunn punt return for a score. The Broncos never looked back and its defense took control of the football game for the remainder of the evening.

The Douglass-Scott County rivalry is new and intense. Both programs are extremely well-coached and are annually at the pinnacle of their classification. Their footprint in Kentucky football can also be seen on Saturdays. Douglass products Dane Key and Jager Burton are UK starters. Former Scott County offensive lineman Bryan Hudson is Louisville’s center. Both schools are priority stops for college recruiters.

Scott County’s Jim McKee is a Kentucky legend. The longtime head coach brought a state championship to Georgetown in 2013 when his team beat Meade County 21-14 at WKU. McKee is highly respected in coaching circles and serves as a mentor to many throughout the Commonwealth. I’ve spoken at his coaching seminars for junior high coaches and I highly respect what he’s done at the school. He’s been a friend for many years.

Frederick Douglass is a modern-day powerhouse and is led by head coach Nathan McPeek. The former Marshall offensive lineman is widely respected and is one of the state’s top young head coaches. He takes a great sense of pride in developing his players for the next level. The top-ranked team in 5A annually dominates Fayette County and is a consistent contender for a state title.

McPeek’s program fell to South Warren 38-26 in the state championship game last season. This year’s squad is loaded with talent and is going to be a particularly tough out in the playoffs. A first state title in school history is certainly attainable in December. McPeek took over a strong program and has taken the Broncos to a higher level. I frequently talk with Coach McPeek. He’s a great football mind that deeply cares for his players.

The Kroger KSR Game of the Week has been at three rivalry series this season. The first was Danville-Boyle County. The second was Belfry-Pikeville. Friday’s rivalry game was different because it’s new. But, don’t misunderstand the situation. Time is just a number. These two teams don’t like each other very much. However, both proud programs have developed somewhat of a bond while facing each other. Both act as a measurement of the season’s success. The rivalry is also fun. Players and fans from both sides are active in the bantering. The winner earns bragging rights for the year. Matter of fact, these two may see each other again in the playoffs.

The setting for Friday’s game was nearly perfect. The cool fall temperature reminded attendees that football season is officially here. The Scott County home crowd was large and vocal. Douglass’ supporters filled the visitor’s bleachers and onlookers lined the outer edges of the field. Friday felt and looked like football season.

Football state.
