Fringe Sports Monday!

What it was like when I met BTI the first time.

-Congratulations to UK Softball for winning the Garnett and Gold tournament and securing an 8-2 start to the season, the teams best in school history.  That wasn’t the only history being made though, as Junior Brittany Cervantes hit three home runs in three consecutive at bats, giving her a .625 batting average, which is pretty absurd.  For that absurdity, she was rewarded with the SEC Player of the Week honors, as well.

-The Baseball team hasn’t had as much luck, though, as three games into the season they have yet to record a win.  Over the weekend the Bat Cats fell to College of Charleston, Miami (OH) and Marshall, likely due to the youth of this years team.  However, there were some good performances (Junior pitcher Alex Meyer pitched 7 innings with only 3 hits and one run,) so the rocky start isn’t anything to get too upset about.

Men’s Tennis continues to perform well despite a loss to number 5 Texas on Friday. They responded by beating number 14 Texas Tech on Saturday and 29 Washington on Sunday.  The teams next event will be in Lexington facing Murray State on March 1st.

-The SEC swimming championships were this past week, and UK had a pretty good showing.  Many of this years swimmers found themselves with top times for themselves and for the school.  Senior Chatham Penrod (if that’s not the name of a swimmer, I dunno what is,) broke her own record in the 200 back by about 2 seconds with a 1:55.30 in the prelims that will go down as the schools fastest.  The women’s team finished 7th overall and the men’s 8th.

-Blog favorite UK Rifle team didn’t compete last week, but they will be this weekend in the GARC Championships.  I’m going to go out on a limb and expect the 10-1 Gat Cats (h/t to Matthew Hays) to win.
