Getting to know Tyler Roberson

We have been hearing many of the names of the top 2013 recruits Kentucky has been targeting for almost a year now. Almost methodically over the past few weeks, we have been able to place check marks next to each name as John Calipari secures their commitments, most of the time via a Thursday edition of ESPNU. Honestly, it has almost become a weekly routine for Kentucky fans over the past month: wake up, work, eat, sleep, celebrate a 5-star commitment in the 2013 class. The final chips are still waiting to fall, but one name that has been surfacing even more so lately than before is Tyler Roberson. The name has not by any means come out of nowhere, but in comparison to how consistently we have been hearing about the Harrison twins and James Young, Roberson is perhaps not as well known. Roberson only recently picked up an offer from the Cats in September after Calipari watched him play in person. Allow me to help you get to know Tyler Roberson a little better. Roberson has not been shy about his wanting to make a visit to Kentucky, and according to ZagsBlog.com, that visit will happen on November 2nd. Even with the recent commitment of big man Marcus Lee, Roberson's interest in the Cats seems to still be in tact. Roberson is a 6'7 (or 6'8 depending on who you trust) forward who can play both the 3 and the 4 spot from Roselle, New Jersey. Depending on which service you prefer, Roberson is anywhere from a top 25 to top 35 prospect. Scout.com has him ranked as the 14th best forward in the class, while Yahoo Sports has Roberson ranked as the 30th best overall player in the class.Scouts describe Roberson as difficult to guard due to his length and athleticism. Roberson has been able to extend his range and can no consistently knock down jump shots, as well as the strong ability he already has to finish around the basket. Roberson attended Rutgers Midnight Madness recently and as the hometown school, Rutgers has to be considered a major player. Roberson has also visited and is considering Syracuse and SMU. He has scheduled visits in the next few weeks with Kansas and Villanova in addition to Kentucky. When Kentucky offered Roberson, he had this to say to CBSSports.com about the honor, "It was nice. They were also a top program in the country, so it was exciting." As of now, Roberson has said that he would like to make a decision by the fall, but could potentially push that decision back to the spring if necessary. Smart money would have to say that Roberson's chances of signing with the Cats would be much greater if Julius Randle decides to go elsewhere. Only time will tell though.
