by:Matt Jones08/07/07
wallace_jones.jpegwayne_turner.gif The tournament continues with a matchup that will challenge all to look all across the UK history books and compare various eras of teams and players. At this point, the tournament is going strong and all looks to be kosher. In our last matchup, Jack Givens defeated James Lee rather handily (5-0 in total votes), thus making Givens the second number one seed to move on into the second round. Thus this matchup is the classic 8-9 affair as Wah Wah Jones takes on Wayne Turner. wahwah Wah Wah Jones If there ever was a player who could complain to the selection committee about his seeding, it is Wah Wah Jones. The pride of Harlan County is the only player in UK history to be First Team All-SEC for an entire four year career. His time with the Wildcats was legendary as he dominated the team for four years, helping lead the Cats to four exception seasons and helping jumpstart the legend of Kentucky basketball. But Wah Wah was much more than simply a basketball player.....he was one of the best football and baseball players in school history as well and exhibited his unbelievable skill at every sport he touched. He was a three time 2nd team All-American and found himself named to the All-SEC Tournament team every season during his four year career. Wah Wah did not score a lot of points (which explains his relatively low seeding), but was a product of an era when scoring was not at a premium. However he was simply one of the best to ever put on a UK uniform.....and he was from Eastern Kentucky.....a deadly combination. turner Wayne Turner: The man with the ugliest shot in school history was also one of the most successful to ever put on a Kentucky uniform. The pride of Beaver Country Day High School (actual name) put up one of the best four year careers from a winning perspective ever assembled. He won a national championship his first year, lost in the Finals his second, won a title his third and made the Elite 8 his fourth. Throughout those years, he played point guard and did what few thought he could be able to make happen, scoring with a supposedly terrible jump shot. Turner's best skill (besides abusing Wojo) was his passing and he stands fourth all time in assists in school history and was a leader on some of the best teams the program has ever seen. He was twice named All-SEC Tournament and twice was on the All-SEC regular season Third team. However individual accolades dont do Turner justice because at his core, he was a team player....a quality shown by a team record that is virtually unsurpassed in school history. So there you have it....Turner v Jones. Two great winners and two great talents. Boston vs Harlan. Its got it all.....let us know who you vote for and any comments or memories you may have....and Wojo, you better go and vote for Wayne....
