Jamie Kennedy, a teacher and assistant football coach at Greenup County High School, died Wednesday from COVID-19 complications. He was 49.

Greenup County Public Schools are closed for the rest of the week as COVID-19 cases soar. Instruction will not be moved online for NTI. Although classes will not be in session, superintendent Traysea Moresea said counselors and mental health providers will be available at Greenup County High School to assist students and staff.

Kennedy, who previously worked in a similar capacity at Johnson Central, taught health at Greenup County. COVID-19 forced the Musketeers’ football team to cancel the opening game of the 2021 season last Friday. Moresea learned Friday that Kennedy was quarantined because of the coronavirus.

“He had a knack for noticing students who needed a little extra help and making sure that counselors knew that kids needed help. He was a very good communicator and really rooted for the underdog,” she told the Herald-Leader.

There are 2,700 students in the Greenup County school system. Roughly 400 of them are currently quarantined.
