How About Some Love for DeAndre Liggins?

by:Anthony Wireman02/23/10
I will be the first to admit that DeAndre Liggins is quickly becoming one of my favorite players on the current Kentucky roster. Not only is he averaging over 25 minutes a night during the last month, but he is doing all the little things that the team needs to win. His season stats of 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds are certainly not overwhelming, but Liggins manages to do the things that often are not present on a stat sheet: he takes charges, hustles, busts his tail on defense and makes smart decisions on both ends of the court. Not to mention his recent knack for hitting key shots in key situations. Even though his offensive statistics will fail to blow fans away, I guarantee John Calipari has noticed his contributions. There are reasons why Liggins is playing significant minutes. The national media is taking notice, as well. Mike DeCourcy of SportingNews.com labels Liggins as "rising" and states: "Let's hear it for Kentucky's DeAndre Liggins, who began the season outside John Calipari's good graces and is ending it as an essential member of a title contender..." Scott Powers of ESPNChicago.com adds some comments from Liggins in his article about DeAndre's turnaround: "I'm having fun playing," Liggins said. "We're winning. I'm having fun. Everyone is happy." Everyone is happy indeed.
