How many coaches use 3rd party recruiters? "99.9% of us"

by:Ally Tucker07/31/12
Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com wrote a piece earlier this afternoon that included among other things, a fairly staggering quote from an anonymous coach. As with any anonymous quote and high number thrown out with such certainty-- it doesn't necessarily mean it should be taken as fact. But Parrish talked with one college coach on Tuesday following the sanctions levied upon Central Florida concerning third-party recruiters, such as Ken Caldwell, and this is what he had to say:
"To have a chance to get a really good player, you'd better have somebody on the inside helping you, but Ken Caldwell was dumb," one college coach told me Tuesday after the NCAA announced sanctions against UCF that included a post-season ban. "I'd say 99.9% of us [have used third-party recruiters]. How else do you get a player? But Caldwell was sloppy. I mean, what's the difference between Ken Caldwell and World Wide Wes? The difference is that one is smart and one is dumb. One is on Twitter and one isn't."
The 99.9% seems like an exaggeration to me. I can't imagine that every coach in the world of college sports uses third-party recruiters.  But feel free to read the article and judge for yourselves.
