Just think, right now, we could be breaking down Kentucky vs. Gonzaga. There was a chance the Cats were going to host the No. 1 Bulldogs on Thursday night at Rupp, but it fell through after the loss to Florida. Even though taking down the top team in the country would have been a very daunting task, freshman Isaiah Jackson said it’s one the team wanted to undertake.
“Me personally, I wanted to play them,” Jackson told reporters today. “The whole team wanted to play them. When Coach said it, everybody wanted to play them. When we lost, it was just a whole bunch of stuff. But yeah, we wanted to play them though for sure. Everybody was geeked about it.”
Calipari spilled the beans about the potential game on his radio show Wednesday night.
“The game that I tried to get and we almost got done was Gonzaga,” Calipari said. “We were going to shove Gonzaga into the middle of our schedule. Mark Few [Gonzaga’s head coach] and I talked–I didn’t say I was going to do this publicly but I thought it would help them and help us. And our kids were absolutely ecstatic. They wanted to do it, we just couldn’t pull it off.”
As much as I love the team’s enthusiasm, I think it’s probably best that game didn’t happen.
