Jim Calhoun loses another player

by:Rashawn Franklin04/21/12

Soon after we learned that Alex Oriakhi would be taking his talents to Mizzou, Coach Jim Calhoun loses another member of his front court. According to CBSSports.com Sophomore forward Roscoe Smith has decided to leave the Huskies as well. Smith, who was a key player in the 2011 National Champion run, will open up his recruitment once again. The 6-foot-8 Smith came to UConn as a wing player but was quickly converted to the post by Calhoun. He averaged 4.4 points in 18.7 minutes this past season, which was down from 6.3 points and 25.4 minutes his freshman year. Smith, like Oriakhi, was a top 50 prospect coming out of high school and will be a highly touted “college free agent.” Losing Oriakhi, Smith, and Andre Drummond to the NBA draft, means that the Huskies only have one more post player under scholarship for the 2012-2013. I don’t know what has been going on in Storrs, but players are heading for the door at an alarming rate and it could be a long time before we see UConn back to national prominence.
