img14794957 Gary Parrish over at CBSSports.com is reporting that Coach John Pelphrey has violated NCAA rules by making improper off campus contact with two 2012 recruits, including top 20 player, Archie Goodwin. Despite the fact that 'improper off campus contact' sounds like something your high school gym teacher would have been fired for, it's a pretty serious violation for Pelphrey considering his precarious situation at Arkansas. The above photo, taken at the urging of the mother of the other recruit, Trey Smith, is the evidence that has cranked up the heat on Pelphrey's already very hot seat. Pelphrey does have a very strong recruiting class coming in next season headlined by B.J. Young and Ky Madden, 21 and 32 respectively in the ESPNU Top 100 rankings, but three straight losing seasons in the SEC have had fans in Fayetteville clamoring for his job. The university released this statement regarding the situation:
As with any potential compliance issue, the institution will gather information and review to determine whether a violation has occurred. If, after a thorough review of the facts, it is determined a violation has occurred, the University of Arkansas will take appropriate action in reporting the information consistent with all established procedures
That may end up meaning that Arkansas will use this as a mess free way to push out a coach that hasn't lived up to early expectations on the court. However, we know as well as any fan base, a great recruiting class is the best way to generate optimism around a program. Luckily for Pelphrey, Arkansas plays Tennessee tonight at 7:30 in the first round of the SEC tournament. If there's anyone you want to be compared to, in terms of NCAA violations, it's Bruce Pearl. You always end up looking like a saint.
