Jon Rothstein ranks Kentucky third...in the SEC
Kentucky’s ranked No. 1 in several preseason polls, but according to Jon Rothstein, the Cats aren’t even the best team in their own conference. Mr. Stay Hungry, Stay Humble tweeted this morning that he believes the Cats are the third best team…in the SEC.
SEC Offseason Power Rankings:
1. Tennessee
2. Auburn
3. Kentucky
4. Mississippi State
5. LSU
6. Florida
7. Alabama
8. Vanderbilt
9. Missouri
10. South Carolina
11. Ole Miss
12. Georgia
13. Arkansas
14. Texas A&M— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) August 6, 2018
Rothstein’s reservations about the Cats aren’t breaking news. He ranked Kentucky sixth in his preseason poll back in June behind Kansas, Gonzaga, Tennessee, Auburn, and Nevada; a month and a half later, he remains convinced the Vols and Tigers are superior squads. The only Kentucky player on his SEC Preseason First Team? Reid Travis.
SEC Preseason First Team:
Tremont Waters, LSU
Bryce Brown, Auburn
Reid Travis, Kentucky
Grant Williams, Tennessee
Daniel Gafford, Arkansas— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) August 6, 2018
Rothstein did include five Kentucky freshmen on his list of impact rookies and Jemarl Baker on his list of “under-the-radar freshmen” (Baker redshirted last year), but PJ Washington didn’t get any love, not even on his list of SEC Breakout Players, which includes Quade Green.
I’ll be curious to see if Rothstein changes his tune after watching the Cats in the Bahamas this week. I can maybe, sort of, understand ranking Tennessee ahead of Kentucky right now due to experience, but Auburn? Come on, man.
