Former Kentucky pass-rusher Josh Paschal has been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list to open his NFL career.

Selected No. 46 overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2022 NFL Draft, will be unavailable for the first four games of his rookie year. This comes after Paschal underwent sports hernia surgery back in the spring shortly after Organized Team Activities (OTAs).

The original injury was suffered in college during his time in Lexington and reaggravated during OTAs. Despite the minor setback, though, Detroit head coach Dan Campbell announced earlier this month Paschal was ahead of schedule in his recovery.

“Where we thought he would be at this point, he’s ahead of schedule,” Campbell said. “He’s doing well, he’s a grinder man, like we’re having to pull him back.”

He’s progressing well, but his full return won’t be in time for the start of the regular season.

Paschal, a former four-star recruit out of Maryland, finished his career ranked third in Kentucky football history with 35.5 tackles for loss. An immediate impact player in 2017, he was sidelined for most of 2018 after he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in the preseason. He went on to play 35 games from 2019-21, finishing his time in Lexington with 137 total tackles and 13.0 sacks.

In his final year as a Wildcat, Paschal went on to earn First Team All-SEC honors after finishing second in the league with 15.5 tackles for loss to go with 53 total tackles, 5.5 sacks, a team-high eight quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and a blocked kick.

Now, he’s waiting to make his NFL debut, which won’t come until Week 5 at the earliest.
