Kelvin Joseph has pulled off more than a handful of impressive plays during the preseason for the Dallas Cowboys, but an untimely injury could have him on the mend moving forward.

According to multiple reports and later confirmed by the NFL, Joseph, who was a second-round pick by the Cowboys in the 2021 NFL Draft, exited Sunday’s preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars due to a left groin injury. Through three preseason games, Joseph had recorded five tackles and one pass deflection. He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game.

Kelvin Joseph spent two seasons as a Kentucky Wildcat from 2019-20 before making the leap to the NFL, where he was drafted with the No. 44 overall pick back in late April. The cornerback initially came to Lexington after transferring from LSU. He signed a four-year rookie contract with the Cowboys in June.

The timing of this injury couldn’t be worse for Joseph, who was expecting to see the field during Dallas’ Week 1 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While he admittedly hasn’t been a lockdown corner by any means during the preseason, he has done more than enough to warrant some action early in the schedule. Depending on how serious this groin injury is though, that might not happen.

But even still, the Cowboys are coming off a horrendous defensive season and were desperate to address some of those issues in the offseason, which is why they drafted Joseph so high. If he can make a quick comeback, perhaps this won’t be a serious blow to his playing time this season.

The Cowboys finished 0-4 in the preseason after being blown out by Jacksonville, 34-14, on Sunday afternoon in Dallas.
